Frequently fluorescein angiography is performed to evaluate the blood vessels in the eyes for retinal disease. This study requires a small injection of vegetable dye into a vein in your arm. Sometimes a second dye is also used which is called Indocyanin Green (ICG). Serial photographs are taken of your retina through a dilated pupil. The test takes approximately 15-20 minutes. Most patients tolerate this test very well without any side effects and do not require any pre-medication. Some patients feel nauseated for a few minutes.
